Prisha re-enters the interview room and performs the formalities. Blake Dufton is in a state of high agitation.

‘You’ve got to release me so I can search for my daughter,’ he pleads.

‘And how are you going to do that? You don’t even know what she looks like.’

‘You must have a photo. I can help. It’s my right. She’s my flesh and blood.’

‘You want to help?’

‘Yes!’

‘Then tell me where she is?’

‘For god’s sake! You don’t believe I’d harm my own daughter, do you?’ he shouts.

‘Did Rosie return to Ashton Grove last night while you were parked up outside her house?’

‘No!’

‘Did you speak to her? Coax her into your car? Drive off?’

‘No! I’m telling you the truth. I want out of here. You can’t keep me,’ he says, rising from his seat.

‘SIT DOWN!’ Prisha bellows.

The solicitor places a hand on Blake’s arm. He responds by dropping back into his chair.

‘I can keep you here for at least the next twenty-four hours, longer if I so choose. And I intend to unless you start telling the truth. Let’s go back to the hammer, the gloves, the bag. Why did you have them? And don’t spin me the tale about helping your brother-in-law with the deck.’

‘It’s true. That’s why I bought them.’

‘Do you even care about Rosie?’ she sighs.

‘Of course I do. I love her.’

‘How can you love someone you’ve never met?’

‘I don’t know. I feel a connection to her. I want to make up for lost time.’

‘Okay, then help me out,’ she asks in a soft, friendly tone.

‘How?’

‘Stop wasting my bloody time!’ She slaps the table with her palm, making him and his solicitor jump. ‘The longer I sit here listening to your bullshit, the less time I have to find Rosie alive! Now, the hammer, gloves, bag; what were you planning to do with them?’

He pushes back in his seat and groans, on the brink of tears. ‘It was because of Rosie I didn’t do it. I intended to, but then I thought of her, and I experienced this enormous feeling of inner strength.’

‘You’re making no sense. You said you didn’t do it. Do what?’

‘The jeweller’s shop near Belle Vue Terrace! I was planning to do a dirty smash and grab. Smash the window, use the claw on the hammer to pull the glass out, and grab whatever was on display. That’s why I had the gloves and the bag. I knew the police would be at full stretch policing the town because of the Goth Weekend. But I didn’t go through with it. I couldn’t do it because at the last moment I thought of Rosie. She’s something worth living for. She’s all I have left. Now please, let me leave so I can search for my girl?’ he pleads as tears roll down his cheeks.

Shit! It’s not him. He has nothing to do with it.
